What is thatch?

Thatch is the build up of organic material between the grass tips and the soil. For the most part thatch is cut blades of grass, stems and other organic material.

Should the grass be bagged to reduce thatch?

Typically the answer is no because grass clippings are mainly water and decompose quickly and can also provide 1/4 of the nutrient requirements for the lawn. However if your lawn in overgrown bagging the lawn instead of mulching it may be a good way to reduce thatch build up. Maintaining a good mowing schedule where less than 1/3 of the blade height is cut at any given time is one of the best ways to reduce thatch buildup.

How often does the grass need dethatched?

Typically we recommend having the grass dethatched every 2 years, that is based on having the lawn mowed every week during the mowing season, having a good fertilization & weed control program, and aerating the lawn at least once per year.

Why does the lawn need dethatching?

Lawns build up thatch over time, some thatch is beneficial for the grass but excessive thatch build up can lead to problems with pests, disease and water runoff just to name a few. With excessive thatch the lawn doesn't get the water or nutrients it needs to have a healthy life.
